WELCOME
Welcome to The Eleventh Hour. We are a post-Firestar roleplay set in the new lake territories, and are AU after the end of the main series. Peace has reigned through the Clans for many moons, but now that peace has fractured and split among the mysteries surrounding their home. Cats are dying with only one thing in common: They are all found floating in, or laying wet and muddy around the lake. The Clans have begun to lash out at one another in fear and confusion, and only RiverClan seems to hold the key to preventing an all-out war. With an entirely member-driven (you decide the outcome!) plot, a mere two hundred minimum word count, and a friendly, active user base, we hope that you like what you see and will consider joining us.

"I don't give a mouse's tail what anybody else might think of us or whatever difference in rank they might see. There is none to me. You are a dear, dear friend to me, Oakwhisker, and I'm honored you feel the way you do. To tell the truth, there is no one else, there never has been. As long as I was serving ShadowClan, I thought that would be okay. But I was wrong. I do love you, Oakwhisker, and I would be just as honored to walk with you, if that's what you want."

AUGUST 25, 2015 Hey, guys! Sorry for the lack of events; between preparing for the new year of uni and trying to get SkyClan in order, there hasn't been much time for brainstorming. The month of September will, however, be chuck-full of stuff for you guys to enjoy to make up for it. That said, the August Activity Check and OTM Nominations have been posted. Please post there as soon as possible if you plan on sticking around.

AUGUST 05, 2015 Hey, guys; don't forget to give this a look-see. We've been seeing quite an unrealistic amount of forbidden relationships (especially regarding the site's medicine cats), so this thread contains some important new information regarding that.

AUGUST 04, 2015 OTM badges are running a little late, because I (Rowan) have to reinstall Photoshop before I can make them. They should start appearing on your mini-profiles within a day or two.

JULY 30, 2015 We have added a board for retroactive threads, titled the Hall of Dreams! This board is for anything that happened in a character's past - including things pre-site or things that never got a chance to be threaded out. All of the usual site rules apply!

JULY 25, 2015 The monthly Activity Check and OTM Nominations have been posted! Please reply to the thread as soon as possible. Also, we're working diligently on SkyClan's site lore, so expect them to make an appearance before Summer's end!

JULY 05, 2015 Ohoho, so soon? Yes! Another FLASH EVENT is taking place over in ShadowClan! Go protect your territory from a desperate fox!

JULY 04, 2015 Happy 4th of July, everyone! In celebration, an adder is attacking the ThunderClan nursery! Hurry and take part in this very fun FLASH EVENT. If you don't have any TC cats, don't worry; we will have stuff for everyone at some point. Stay tuned!

JUNE 25, 2015 We ask that you all please take a look at this post within the activity check thread, as it contains some important information regarding the OTMs.

JUNE 25, 2015 The monthly activity check and otm nominations have been posted! Please reply to the thread by July 1st, or you will risk deletion.

JUNE 21, 2015 Green-leaf has officially started on EH, and with it comes another event! This event will last for about two weeks, so have at it! The deadline has also been chosen for our SkyClan high positions, and it will be on June 28, 2015. However, they will likely not be announced until a few days after that, as we have implemented a new staff voting system for these sorts of decisions.

JUNE 20, 2015 Alright, congrats to our newest moderator, Aspen! All of the applications were beyond fantastic. This has literally been the hardest decision we've ever had to make, and I truly wish we could just wrap you all up in a tiny modlet blanket and keep everyone, but there will be more opportunities in the future, I'm sure.

JUNE 19, 2015 Friendly reminder for everyone to please post in this thread once you've finished your character. Sometimes it's hard for us to be able to tell which apps are done and which are not, which then leads to us taking forever to review and accept them. We don't like to keep people waiting for too long before they're able to play their characters, so this just makes it easier for us. Thanks!

JUNE 16, 2015 Seeing as how we've been seeing a lot of this lately, the rules have been updated.

JUNE 09, 2015 We now have a weather box! It can be found right beneath our welcome message, so please look to it when starting up new threads. This will be updated daily or weekly to keep things fresh, depending on how long the weather pattern holds.

JUNE 05, 2015 Today marks one year since EH's grand opening, and we are celebrating with a brand new skin! Not only that, but be sure to keep your eye out for several goodies throughout this month, including (but not limited to) contests and events. Here's to the future!

JUNE 04, 2015 In light of Tinsel's departure for the time being, Batnose has become the new ShadowClan medicine cat. Now, the reason we didn't hold auditions is simple; because Orchidsong didn't hold the position for long, we felt it to be reasonable that we fall back on someone else who had auditioned at the same time, and therefore we reviewed the old auditions one more time. Congratulations!

MAY 30, 2015 Training Threads and Pregnant Leaders / Deputies will no longer show up as a merit, just to keep things a little bit cleaner, as we're sure a lot of people will purchase training threads. This will prevent merit repeats for items. If your Training Thread or Pregnant Leader / Deputy item is still showing up as a merit, please PM Rowan and she will fix it. In similar news, we've limited the number of a single item permitted to be in your inventory at a time to one. This will hopefully prevent people from hoarding, and allow others to have a chance at snagging the item they need. Only one more day remains in the activity check, so please post if you plan on sticking around!

MAY 29, 2015 Please welcome Brandad to the EH Crew!! He is our newest moderator, so please don't hesitate to ask him questions and offer your congratulations!

MAY 28, 2015 Sadly, Tinsel has decided to step down from her position of staff. We will miss her, however she will definitely be welcomed back to the team if she ever decides she wants to help out again! She is not leaving the site, and will remain a beloved member of our community.

MAY 25, 2015 The monthly activity check and otm nominations have been posted.

MAY 19, 2015 Congratulations to Tyl and her character, Darkstorm, on becoming the new WindClan deputy! Thank you to everyone else who auditioned, too. You made the decision incredibly difficult for all of us (and Bran). We look forward to seeing how WC develops from here.

MAY 18, 2015 Don't forget to drop by our mentor and apprentice pairings thread to let us know when you've got enough posts in a thread. We try to stay on top of it, but some threads still manage to slip past us.

MAY 16, 2015 This is a reminder for everyone to please log into all your accounts daily, even if you don't post. It really helps us out when we recycle things. Also, remember that there is still a prey shortage! I've noticed a lot of threads where the hunting parties have been quite successful, however they should not be. Some prey is fine, of course, but you should not be finding large quantities of prey, and it shouldn't be large and/or plump when it is found. Yes, this applies to RiverClan, too; the fish are at an all-time low, as well, more likely to be found dead.

MAY 13, 2015 Congratulations to Tinsel and her character, Orchidsong, for becoming the new medicine cat of ShadowClan! If you didn't get it, we're sorry; there were a lot of great auditions, and there will surely be more opportunities to audition for another spot in the future. For instance, did you know that WindClan currently needs a deputy? The deadline for that has been set for May 19th, so go audition while you can!

MAY 10, 2015 Syn has chosen to step down from her role as WindClan leader. She is fine, so don't worry; she just doesn't feel like she can be active enough to hold that position. However, she will be keeping Reedwhisker, one of the RiverClan medicine cats, and Acornstar is still alive (now known as Acornbelly); we are still determining his reasons for stepping down. This means that Harenose has been promoted, and that WindClan Deputy auditions are now open!!

MAY 06, 2015 Congratulations to Nocturne and her character, Rooktail, for becoming the new deputy of RiverClan! We will be naming the new ShadowClan Medicine Cat on May 13th, so get your auditions in by then if you're interested!

MAY 01, 2015 The activity check has ended, and any inactive accounts have now been purged from the site. If you have returned, or you were somehow deleted by mistake, we ask that you simply remake your accounts and PM Rowan, so that she can restore your things.

APRIL 30, 2015 The activity check and otm voting will end tomorrow, so please post if you're still active, and haven't yet. If you don't have an active absence thread, you will be deleted if you don't post! There are also meetings going on in ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and WindClan that you guys can feel free to post in if you're looking for something quick to do. c:

APRIL 30, 2015 It's recently been called to my (Rowan's) attention that I may have handled Mericet's leaving quite poorly, and I would like to make it right. This should have been made on the day that she left us (which would have officially been April 27th, 2015), but here it goes, and I hope it's not too late for it to mean anything. Mer has decided that EH is not in her best interests anymore, and has decided to leave. However, I would like to say that she put a lot of time and effort into EH, helping me to make it the fantastic success it has been all this time, and I will forever be grateful to her for that. She drove me to make updates when I was being a bit slow, and when activity was low, she logged in and encouraged others to do so as well. She's the reason we have an automated marketplace now, and that awards system? Thank her for that. She loved the site as much as I do, so please understand that her leaving was through no fault of her own. As for her characters, she has said that they are all dead (except for adopted ones, which may be put back up for adoption), but she has requested that no details about their deaths be given, and I'd like you all to respect that wish. Thank you.

APRIL 29, 2015 Our new RiverClan Deputy will be announced on May 6th, so get those auditions in while you can!

APRIL 25, 2015 As per the usual, our Activity Check and OTM Nominations have been posted for the month of April. Please post, and vote as soon as you are able! From now on, those who don't vote in the OTMs will not be allowed to win in the category that they did not vote in. Any empty spaces will be chosen by our staff.

APRIL 21, 2015 The raid has ended with Stonestar's reveal that it is not the Clans killing off the cats... something is wrong with the lake.

APRIL 18, 2015 We now have a StarClan sub-board available for you all to roleplay the dead kitties that you've kept around! We don't want to see a bunch of freshly made dead cats, however; this is mainly for characters who have died on site. One or two cats from one of your living characters' pasts is alright, just don't go overboard please. Thank you!

APRIL 12, 2015 Due to the amount of people starting up a forbidden romance, which we feel to be quite unrealistic to the way that the warriors world works, it is now required that you purchase this from the marketplace. You will need to do this even if you've already begun your relationship, otherwise it will not be permitted to continue. If you've already given birth to forbidden kits, please PM Rowan or Mericet and they will gift you the forbidden romance, but only if you've already gotten that far. Thank you, and we hope you understand.

APRIL 09, 2015 Congratulations to Tinsel for being selected for biography moderator and to Zebra for becoming our new advertisement moderator! Be sure to give these two warm hugs when you see them. Good job everyone who auditioned, it was hard to choose between all of you!

APRIL 03, 2015 Currently, the staff team is accepting moderator auditions! They're open to members new and old, and we wish all you hopefuls good luck! We would also like to congratulate Bran, with his character Harenose for achieving deputy in WindClan!

MARCH 24, 2015 Congratulations to Golden, and Maplecloud for becoming the newest ThunderClan Deputy! Thank you to everyone who tried out; it was a truly difficult decision to make.

MARCH 22, 2015 The March activity check and OTMs have been posted! Please reply by April first. Thank you!

MARCH 17, 2015 The deadline for the ThunderClan Deputy Auditions has been decided: March 24, 2015. If you are interested in the position, please have your audition in by then. Thank you, and happy St. Patrick's Day!

MARCH 12, 2015 New skin! As always, please let us know if you find anything out of place or awkward, or if any of the colours sear out your eyeballs. Remember to please log into all your accounts daily, even if you don't post; it really helps us out when we recycle things.

MARCH 09, 2015 Due to Fallow's current situation, she has decided to downsize. As a result, sadly, Whitestep will be resigning, and ThunderClan Deputy Auditions are now open! Be sure to get your auditions in asap. WindClan MCA will remain closed until Zebra feels like Owlberry is ready to take on a new apprentice.
EDIT Fallow is alright, she just isn't able to be around much and felt that it was unfair for her to have high positions while she's on hiatus. She appreciates your concern and will be doing her best to keep us updated on how she is. <3

FEBRUARY 28, 2015 Friendly reminder for everyone to please log into all your accounts daily! It makes it easier on us when we recycle things. Thank you!

FEBRUARY 24, 2015 The February activity check and OTMs have been posted and end March third. Please post! <3

FEBRUARY 23, 2015 Due to our growing member base (and because of a recent incident on my part), you are now able to reserve names for up to one week at a time to make sure that your prefix does not get snatched up before you are able to finish your bio. Please visit the name claim to do so. On a brighter note, I am pleased by the rate at which the raid is moving! Keep it up!

FEBRUARY 19, 2015 Congratulations, Mothpaw, on becoming the newest member of ThunderClan's medicine team! A big thank you to all who applied for the position — you all definitely succeeded in making this difficult for me with your stunning applications!

FEBRUARY 19, 2015 It's about to get real over in ThunderClan, as the RAID has been started! The character excerpt contest has been closed, too, and the results of that will be posted momentarily. The ThunderClan MCA auditions are closed! Results will be posted by Moonaloo later today.

firestrike,
His shoulder ached.

It had been at least a season since the ThunderClan raid, not that he was counting. Okay, maybe he was, but so was probably most of ThunderClan. At least, it wasn't unheard of -- most of the clan was still covering from their war wounds. Yesterday's Dawn Patrol had been composed of warriors with patches of fur still missing, scars lining their rough tabby pelts and even deeper, psychological wounds carved into places the eye could not see. Spiderfall and Mothpaw had been able to patch up most of the physical wounds, but that did not mean everything else had healed. Firestrike thought back to the flesh-wound he'd seen on his father's flank just last week, still pale and pink, and swallowed. They had suffered.

They had all suffered.

Even so, Firestrike had been able to escape with the barest of wounds. He had fought side-by-side his clanmates, but where some had barely escaped by the skin of their teeth, Firestrike had not. He had not even come close to seeing glimpses of Sorrelpaw and Tigerkit in their midst, though that was mostly thanks to Rowanstar and Redheart's teachings. It was thanks to the skill that they'd afforded him as an apprentice, the techniques that they'd ingrained in him after moons of training, that he'd been able to fight so valiantly, so honorably. Firestrike was lucky. He was lucky, and he was grateful.

Still, that wasn't to say he didn't have wounds on his own. The ginger tom had just been able to remove the cobwebs on his hindleg, was still able to walk forthright without a limp. A few moons ago? That wouldn't have been possible. In fact, one of the reasons that he hadn't gone to the last gathering was because of exactly that - his limp had still be too prominent, his gait too awkward. Now, though, the bones had set properly in place and his muscles only occasionally hurt. Which... brings us back to our point.

His shoulder ached. Should I go see Spiderfall?, he wondered, briefly, as he stepped out into the green-leaf sun. Honestly, it didn't really hurt that much. Just a bit, probably because of the way he'd curled when he slept. The muscles in his neck were in still a bit of a kink, and - Well. He flexed his paws into the dirt, claws unsheathed as he stretched. I'm not dying.

Which really only meant one thing. Going to Spiderfall could wait. He was sore, sure, but that could be easily fixed. "Duststorm!" he called, spotting the copper warrior from across camp. Silence befell the clearing. Normally, this - that is, Firestrike calling Duststorm out - wouldn't be any cause for alarm, but the pair hadn't spoken in weeks. At least, not properly. They'd been on patrols (with other cats) and errands (with other cats), but ever since the incident between Duststorm and Ravenpool... they hadn't been alone. It hadn't been this bad since Duststorm - straight as a ruler, Duststorm - had avoided him for weeks over that stupid, silly reason. But, as much as Firestrike hated to admit it, Nightstrike was right. He had to suck it up. "Want to go out?" He cracked a smile, hoping he looked convincing, and cocked his head to the side. "The fresh-kill pile is looking a little low."

Beyond the boundaries of your city's lights Stand the heroes waiting for your cries So many times you did not bring this on yourself When that moment finally comes I'll be there to help
He'd lost track of the moons that had passed since the events during ThunderClan's raid, though that was to say he never tried, nor desired, to make the effort in keeping tracks. Even for age. Even as some of the Clan's kits became apprentices and apprentices became warrior. In a sense, he seemed to think that losing track of the time would give the appearance of more moons since. Maybe it would ease the sorrow that still clawed through the deepest depths of his heart. He felt fine. He acted fine; rebellious, impulsive, same as he'd always been. He even told others he was fine, though that could just be the reflex response. He truly was fine. Right? Damn, right.

Duststorm had been one of the few lucky enough to escape from the raid physically unscathed except for a few minor bruises -- but the same could not be said for him psychologically. It didn't matter that he couldn't remember much of the fight; he had heard enough from his friends and innocent bystanders. There was an inexplicable feeling to having an entire portion of his past suddenly gone, as though it was never there and like it had never happened. Some mornings he'd wake up feeling as though everything that had happened had been a dream, but it never took long for reality to crash back down and remind him that things weren't perfect.

So, as this is, Duststorm currently sat alone in the ThunderClan camp. His surviving sister and brother were off on a patrol, meanwhile his mother and father were StarClan knows where. Duststorm, bored out of his mind but having no desire to leave camp, had made several attempts to flirt up the she-cats loitering around camp but each attempt had ended as unsuccessfully as all his previous ones. He was wistfully staring at the dwindling fresh-kill pile when he heard the sound of his name called across camp and felt the eerie silence that followed shortly after.

The source of his name was Firestrike and in that moment Duststorm was convinced that his life was going to end. He'd avoided the older tom, in spite of being his best friend, for a reason. One of these reasons being an immense and overwhelming embarrassment every time he saw the ginger tabby's maw. Now, Duststorm wasn't the kind of guy to get embarrassed (that's what he says anyway), but for some unexplainable reason Firestrike had always brought about a different story. Maybe it was his father's verbalized desire for Duststorm to be more like Firestrike. Or maybe be Firestrike. Yeah, that was probably more likely. Not to mention Duststorm had previously decided that if it was somehow possible to switch places with Firestrike, he would be forced to do it by Nightstrike. That was a comforting thought. Though, to be honest, Duststorm wouldn't mind switching places with Firestrike. Hell, he already wondered what that would be like. Probably a little awesome. Maybe.

Shit, that's beside the point. Duststorm might have laughed at the resurfaced idea, but Firestrike was already talking to him and that's where his focus needed to be. "What?" Well, that was kind of an uncharacteristically dumb response. He'd heard loud and clear what Firestrike had asked him, albeit he may have been thrown off a little bit by the implication that Firestrike wanted him to go hunting.

He hated hunting.

"Wait, don't repeat that. I heard you." He shook his head, clearing his thoughts. Well he probably looked like an idiot -- is what somebody else might have thought. Certainly not Duststorm. It'd just been a long day. it was only morning. He was probably just tired. He'd literally slept almost 8 hours last night. Whatever. For a moment, Duststorm contemplated turning down Firestrike's offer, instead his heart spoke for him (damn that sounds a little gay). "I'll only go if you don't make me try to chase down any more of those stupid birds." He was serious, but the light-hearted tone of his voice seemed to read otherwise. That's what he would have said if Firestrike had asked him at any other time, right? Stay cool. Stay cool.

"You know what happened last time." Stay cool. Stay cool. Do not make this a repeat of that whole gay-straight thing. "Okay?"

firestrike,
Relief bloomed in his chest when Duststorm stilled in his steps and responded to him. He didn't dip his head and run away, pretending that he hadn't heard Firestrike's voice. Then again, I did call him out in the middle of camp, he thought a bit wryly, but tried not to concentrate that. Instead, he took a step closer to the ashy-brown tom and focused him with a careful, patient expression. His brow arched.

Wait, don't repeat that. I heard you.

Typical Duststorm. Not that Firestrike really expected any different. He waited for his offer to sink in, anxiety slowly building in his stomach at the thought. He really hoped that he wouldn't have to try any harder. Hoped that maybe Duststorm would give him a little leeway for this, for not stepping up sooner like the older warrior that he was.

Thankfully, luck seemed to be on his side. The other tom agreed to go with him, offering a response that drew a laugh out of the fire-pelted warrior. "Right, " he purred in good jest, gaze twinkling like emeralds. "Like you could catch them anyway." Sure, Duststorm was no longer Dustpaw but it wasn't like many of those mannerisms would have changed. One of the greatest things about the ashy warrior was that he was so predictable - so easy to understand. The same things that had dictated his mannerisms as an apprentice were probably true as a warrior. A bit arrogant, kind of an idiot, and terrible at hunting. "Plus, you don't chase birds. You pounce them. Rabbits are the ones you chase."

Duststorm's last words drew his paws to a halt at the camp entrance as he turned to the lighter tom with a tilt of his head. "Oh?" he asked, whiskers twitching with barely contained amusement. "Hmm, I think I'm getting a little old. Remind me?"

Truth be told, there really had been no way for Duststorm to get out of going along with his best friend for a hunting trip. First off, he'd called him out in front of the entire camp and he'd been painfully aware of breaths held and all eyes on him. StarClan, this entire camp was always up in his business. Don't do this, don't do that. You're going to get in trouble, Duststorm. Uuuuuuugh, if he heard Ashheart say that one more time he was going to shove him in a adder hole. That's a lie, of course. Duststorm would never actually shove them into an adder hole. Ashheart and Sparrowflight were his entire world, but any cat would be wrong if they believed he hadn't thought about throwing them both down the adder hole. Ashheart was always up in his business, just like the rest of this mouse-brained Clan, and Sparrowflight was always -- being Sparrowflight. Remember those anger issues...yeah. Secondary to a whole slew of other issues that Duststorm was extremely fond of pretending didn't exist.

A look of brief offense glanced across the warrior's features at Firestrike's first statement of his hunting skills and Duststorm's ears flattened distastefully against the base of his skull. "Shut up." His tail twitched, eyes slit to portray insult, though he was far from actually angry, "I don't need to be good at hunting. I can fight. I'm a fucking awesome fighter. I'll be the one you all come crying to when the camp gets messed up. You. Are. Welcome." Okay, so the older warrior's statements weren't lies or anything like that, but that didn't mean Duststorm wasn't allowed to take offense at them. It was only okay when he made fun of it. Unfortunately, everyone (literally everyone) in the Clan knew that not only did Duststorm hate hunting, but he was absolutely terrible at it. He'd gotten the absolute treasure of being retold the countless stories of his majestic failures time and time again. Rabbits, birds, mice -- it was fucking maddening. How could he be so good at fighting, but so horrible at hunting. They were basically the same thing.

Duststorm fell back to his hindquarters when Firestrike paused at the camp entrance, head swinging left and right to view the rising chatter of cats returning to their normal everyday activities. When Firestrike spoke, though, his attention was immediately snagged on the amused comment. "W-What?!" His ears shot up and he both flushed bright red and recoiled at the comment. "Fox-dung! I'm not telling you!" His long whiskers twitched in disbelief, the rest of him stiff in defense. And then -

"Augh!"

His loud cry cut through the growing chatter of felines, silencing them once again. "I'm leaving!" Anything to be out of this place. So frustrating! So maddening! So, UGH. Duststorm rose to his paws and stormed past Firestrike and through the camp entrance, willfully failing to offer even a second glance. He loved Firestrike as much as any best friend could, but booooy did the older warrior make him feel like an idiot sometimes. Maybe he should have appreciated Firestrike making an effort to talk again and act like everything was normal, but nah -- that wasn't Duststorm's way. He was just going to get really angry for a few minutes and then be completely over himself.

firestrike,
For a second, a very very brief second, Firestrike felt a stroke of fear -- had he gone too far? Was pretending that things were all okay, that they were still the same friends they were before the ThunderClan raid too much? Firestrike could remember the occurances of the day almost as clear as he could remember Sorrelpaw's death: watching his psuedo-apprentice sinking his fangs into another cat, his eyes wild with grief. Feeling helpless, useless and twice as guilty as he'd been when he dragged Sorrelpaw's limp body back to camp. He remebered the way that he snapped at Duststorm, yowling at him to get off and what did he think he was doing and didn't he have any pride? Who will forgive you, Duststorm? The fact that Firestrike had avoided him as best as possible (and his best was quite good) for the next days, next week, had not escaped the ginger tom. But, then again, he thought. It wasn't like Duststorm hadn't avoided him either. Together, they were a two-sided coin.

But, of course, the second had only been brief. Firestrike read the brief offense that flashed through the younger tom's eyes as mostly playful, and his mouth quirked upwards in a smirk. Which... promptly fell at the other's words. Duststorm didn't notice it, but Firestrike's eyes dimmed to a stormy green, narrowed. Of course he still thinks that way, Firestrike, his thoughts were honest, painfully so. You never taught him any better. Guilt, for a moment, swarmed all the disappointment and he was momentarily distracted.

Perhaps that was why he was paricularly scathing when he continued, knowing the parts that would hit the younger tom most. Duststorm acted as expected - predictable as always - and stuttered a response, eventually flushing at the comment. Firestrike's soft laugh was cut off by the pale tom's frustrated yell, echoing across camp and sending a group of birds flying through the trees. "You do that, " he purred, following the tom on quick, but still slower-than-Duststorm steps. He kept a couple of mouselengths behind the other, knowing very well when Duststorm needed his space and when Firestrike ought to pull him back. He kept pace easily; his strides were lengthy and unemotional, compared to the tom's short, frantic bursts of energy.

After a couple of moments had passed, Firestrike opened his mouth to say something - apologize maybe for ruffling his feathers - when the wind changed direction and a scent filled the roof of his mouth. "Duststorm!" he hissed, all business. The tom could be angry all he want, but Firestrike would tear a pawful of fur off his pelt if he let it get in the way of the hunt. Firestrike prowled forward on swift, light paws. His hunting crouch was painfully perfect. In front of him, his eyes were pinned on a tiny mouse - barely anything, but at least something. Before a cat could blink, the tom launched himself across the undergrowth, paws outstretched. The mouse didn't hear Firestrike until he was too late, the tom's left paw going to strike the rodent. He pinned the rodent with one paw and sunk his claws into the body with the other, waiting until the prey went limp. Satisfied, Firestrike straightened. "Sorry. Were you saying something?" His voice - this time- wasn't teasing. It was honest. He hadn't been paying attention to Duststorm, even if he'd said something.

To Firestrike, their quarrel from camp was already behind them. Now, they were out on a mission.

you wanted so badly to light up his world, that you couldn’t see how he feared fire

Beyond the boundaries of your city's lights Stand the heroes waiting for your cries So many times you did not bring this on yourself When that moment finally comes I'll be there to help
In spite of a supposed hunting trip, the heavy steps of Duststorm as he scathingly muttered empty threats beneath his breath were everything but the quiet paw steps expected to accompany these often dead-end trips. His paws crinkled dried leaves and cast loud sounds through the eerie quiet of ThunderClan's territory. His earlier cry appeared to have scared off the majority of airborne prey surrounding the protected camp blissfully unaware of the dangers that lay beneath the maze of connected branches. Somewhere in the far-off distance a crow cawed a deep-throated warning to invading species, but once it's screech had quieted the forest fell back to the gentle rustle of overhead foliage and the loud crinkling of dried leaves beneath his paws.

He should apologize. He wanted to apologize, but pride and embarrassment warred within his mind and choked the words before they reached his throat. Yes, he was angry, but he felt bad about being angry. He always felt bad about being angry. He was well aware of his inability to control his own anger and frustration. No matter how delicately he painted a picture of jokes and humor over top of the emotions, complete with the laughs and the joy that he portrayed to the clan, deep past the yellow gaze of his eyes the emotions still warred in stormy proportions. The words, the anger, they curled through his mind and thoughts with sharp, thorny talons, stripping away clear thoughts and replacing them with the words of his deep-ground demons. He'd managed to cage them for so long, but the deaths of Sorrelpaw and Ravenpool had bent the bars of their prisons and let them find free reign within his mind. And yet - Firestrike stayed. Through the outbursts and the tantrums and the insults, through the deaths of their closest companions, Firestrike was still here. The ginger tom could just as easily be another face in the crowd muttering behind his back or laughing at him, but he wasn't. He was here.

Why? Duststorm would never ask, lest he accidentally break some kind of unspoken rule between them. Why was he not like the rest of them. The ones who took his jokes at face value and let him be a free-running idiot, but never stepped closer than the reach of their paws. The ones who called him crazy, wild, dangerous. Oh, yes, he'd heard them after the ShadowClan raid. He was dangerous and he didn't even remember what had happened.

Finally, Duststorm had been about to stop and turn back to Firestrike, maybe to mutter that two syllable word, a speedy, honest apology, and maybe to ask about their plans for the hunt, but he froze when Firestrike hissed his name. A word beginning with 'wh-' slipped from his maw, but he choked on a successful attempt to silence himself. The scent never reached him, most likely due to an immense lack of observant skill, but he knew that Firestrike had picked up on something rustling beneath the forest's undergrowth. He watched in silence as Firestrike dropped into an effortlessly perfect hunting growth. Envy, then pride, filled the thoughts of Duststorm as he remembered that this was his best friend he was watching. Hate for hunting or not, Firestrike was amazing at what he did and Duststorm could not hide the admiration that filled his awe-touched gaze.

And then it was over, just as quickly as it'd begun, and Firestrike had returned to Duststorm with a delicious smelling rodent. "What. Oh, I wasn't say -" Excitement cut off his words before he'd even finished the sentence, "Okay, okay, wait! That was awesome! Like, I know you know that I don't know anything about the hunting crouch stuff, but I'm pretty sure that was as perfect as perfect can get. And you got the mouse! We're awesome. Um, you're awesome! Yeah." His enthusiasm and praise rivaled the kits enthralled by the tall tales of elders as he twitched his tail in pleasant joy. All his anger seemed to dissipate as he brushed the ginger tom with truthful praise.

"That," he pointed out. "Does not mean I'm going to enjoy this trip though. Just cause I think you look pretty awesome. I can try to find the food, but you're probably gonna have to catch it because if not all we're gonna bring back to camp is that thing. We good?" And then he broke his gaze from Firestrike and the mouse to look around the forest that engulfed it's prey in light-cast shadows, searching prey as though his long-winded compliments had not scared them all back into their burrows. "We can head towards the border, I think? Maybe do a big circle? I don't know how you normally do this. But -" He didn't wait for a response, seeming to decide that this was exactly how it should be done, before turning to trudge deeper into their territory.
